Between Camille Corot’s legacy and the landscape tradition.
For more than twenty years, Catherine Chopinet has developed a body of work nourished by the attentive observation of the natural world and by the emotion it evokes. Trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, she acquired a solid command of drawing, colour and materials that forms the foundation of her pictorial language. She explores watercolour, pastel and oil with a sensibility oriented toward luminous vibration and inner depth.
Lozère, with its austere mountains and shifting light, is one of the sources of her imagination. Her landscapes never seek a faithful transcription of reality; they become spaces in which nature carries an interior presence. Trees, paths, horizons and skies take on a living form, as though painting were revealing the hidden part of the landscape.
Her approach follows the continuity of Corot and the Barbizon School, attentive to light, atmosphere and the moment when landscape becomes experience. It also echoes the neo‑Impressionist heritage through the importance given to chromatic variations and to the way colour structures space. Her free and supple touch organises the composition and gives each work a singular breath.
Her painting, stripped of any spectacular effect, makes nature a place of contemplation sometimes inhabited by silent figures. Exhibited in Paris and Karlsruhe, she also pursues a teaching activity that nourishes her exacting eye. Her work thus links the intimate landscapes of Barbizon to the chromatic explorations of neo‑Impressionism while asserting a deeply personal voice. Her paintings do not describe nature; they inhabit it and invite an inner experience of light and form.
