Michel Cadoret (1923-1985)

Untitled, 1959 Mixed media on canvas

Dimensions: 77 × 102 cm

This abstract composition, created in 1959, belongs to one of the most inventive periods of Michel Cadoret’s artistic career. Closely related to the spirit of his renowned Strainers (Passoires) series, the work develops a visual language based on layered materials, imprints, collage, and texture. Organic and geometric forms intertwine within a free composition where engraved surfaces, rubbing effects, and chromatic contrasts create a vibrant and enigmatic space.

Dominated by tones of earth, ochre, black, and white, the composition reveals a subtle balance between gestural spontaneity and architectural structure. The reliefs, imprints, and materials incorporated into the painted surface reflect Cadoret’s constant exploration of the materiality of painting, transformed here into a genuine field of experimentation.

The Artist

A unique figure in postwar French abstraction, Michel Cadoret developed from the 1950s onward an original body of work based on the exploration of textures and experimental processes. His practice moved away from strictly geometric movements in favour of a more sensitive approach to matter and sign. Works from this period are among the most sought after within his oeuvre and illustrate the artist’s personal contribution to the renewal of French lyrical and material abstraction.

This work was presented in the retrospective dedicated to Michel Cadoret at the Museum of Saint Germain en Laye. It was also exhibited at Galerie Norval in New York, Galerie du XXème Siècle in Paris, and Galerie Kaganovitch in Paris.

Decorative Appeal

With its nuanced palette and remarkable material richness, this composition naturally finds its place in a contemporary interior, a postwar art collection, or a professional setting seeking a work of strong visual presence. Its abstract language, both powerful and refined, allows it to engage equally well with modern and classical environments.
