This 1978 painting entitled Le petit frère presents an intimate scene in which three seated figures stand out against a set of vivid colours. Frédéric Brandon constructs a quiet and attentive image centred on the relationship between the characters and on the presence of the child, whose posture creates the point of balance within the composition.
The harmony of reds, purples and blacks gives the work a strong and contemporary presence. The structured colour fields and the simplicity of the forms create an immediate decorative impact suited to modern spaces as well as more classical interiors. The scene, both tender and graphic, brings a warm and meditative atmosphere.
Frédéric Brandon uses a mixed technique based on coloured planes, simplified contours and a worked material that gives depth and vibration to the chromatic areas.
The artist
Frédéric Brandon is a major figure of Narrative Figuration. His work explores the ability of painting to reinvent the image through everyday scenes, colour play and a constant reflection on the act of looking. His practice combines spontaneity, discreet humour and a singular mastery of visual rhythm.
